Visualize This!
Volume 9- September, 2005

Here in an interesting story: A few years ago, at one of my Chiropractic Philosophy seminars, I heard about a famous study published through the University of Chicago. We were discussing what happens to the brain’s nerve cells during visualization, and how this effects the outcome of a patient’s healing.

In the study, three groups of students with equal ability in basketball foul shooting were used. The first group was told not to practice at all for 30 days. The second group was asked to practice foul shooting one hour a day, also for 30 days. For the same time period, the third group was asked to visualize foul shooting one hour a day, but not to actually shoot.

When their abilities were retested, group one didn’t improve their shooting. Group two, the ones that did practice, improved their success by 24%. Group three, the visualizers, improved by the nearly the same percentage (23%) as the ones that practiced one hour a day. The reason? It is speculated that same neural wiring that is developed in the brain by actually shooting foul shots is the same as wiring created by simply visualizing them. As it says somewhere in the Bible; “As a man thinks, so is he.”

This ramifications of this story are staggering. Among other things, this study demonstrates that your brain uses the same neural-network whether something is experienced in actual fact, or just experienced in thought. In other words, if there is arm pain and you can visualize it becoming well, it will become so, because the brain doesn’t know the difference. But, as in the experiment referenced above, you must train yourself to do this. There are endless sources of medical-placebo studies, neurological studies, quantum-theory experiments, philosophical writings, religious teachings, esoteric ideas, and anecdotal first-hand accounts that tell us that this is true: that the universe can yield to one’s intention... but, do you know it in your mind to be so?

Do you know that healing is not only possible, but that it something you are designed to do? Do you know that you are a self-healing organism and that there is absolutely no disease that cannot be healed? Do you know you have an immune system that has developed over millions of years to protect you from illness, and that it needs no help from any man-made vaccinations? Do you know that any drug you have ever taken only works because it mimics a substance your Innate Wisdom creates internally without any outside help? Do you know that we get ill when we attempt to control life’s circumstances? Or are these ideas part of a “story” that doesn’t work within the context of the health and illness story as you know it?

The fact is, many people are quite uncomfortable until a doctor gives a name to what is causing their symptoms. With a known label, the condition may then be considered “acceptable” for the rest of one’s life story. The truth is that my illness is about my story and yours is about your story. There are keys to unlocking the meaning behind illness, but they are not in any pharmacy. The stories we adopt have a powerful and magically suggestive effect on not only the way we interpret our symptoms, but also on the quality of our life experiences.

We all must have a story. Unfortunately, many stories commonly held today are ineffective and even dangerous when it comes to healing. The prognosis we are given by our chosen storyteller (in this case “doctor”) has the power of creation, or the power of destruction in us. So we must chose our stories and storytellers wisely because we are probably more affected by our projected prognosis than by the progression of the disease itself. We might do well to pick a story and a storyteller that enlivens and inspires us to new heights of awareness and possibilities.

I invite you to entertain my story that we deserve to be well; that we can have healthier, more creative, more passionate, more spiritual, and more successful lives. I ask that you consider my myth that healing is a birthright, and that the story I tell here is one that can help you access that right. I hope that you can share in my fantasy that the universe yields to our intention and that our experiences happen exactly the way they are supposed to. I wish that you can learn my fable that to heal means to surrender the urge of our intellect to control life, and to feel and live from the reality that we are all connected to the oneness that runs it all.

As always, I look forward to your comments and/or questions regarding this or any other of my journals....

In Peace, love, and Exceptional Health.
